Office of the Inspector General Careers

Office of the Inspector General Inspectors are responsible for performing professional work investigating, both criminal and administrative violations, with the jurisdiction of the Florida Department of Corrections.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducting investigations of alleged fraud, waste, abuse, and employee misconduct affecting the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC)
  • Investigative responsibilities to include following up on leads, conducting interviews, preparing an investigative summary report with investigative conclusions that may involve presenting information and evidence to a prosecuting attorney.
  • Provide expert testimony at legal proceedings and assists in preparation of witnesses, victim, and evidence for use by the prosecution.

Minimum Qualifications

In accordance with Florida Statute 943.1395 any person employed as an Inspector General or Inspector must:
  • Possess an active certification in Law Enforcement, Corrections or Correctional Probation Officer as issued Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.
  • Have at least three years’ experience conducting investigations.
  • Be at least 19 years of age.
  • Be a citizen of the United States notwithstanding any laws of the State to the contrary.
  • Have a valid driver’s license.
  • Not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement, nor have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States. Any person who, after July 1, 1981, pleads guilty or nolo contendere to or is found guilty of a felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement shall not be eligible for employment or appointment as an officer, notwithstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication.
  • Have passed a medical examination by a licensed physician, based on specifications established by the Commission.
  • Have a good moral character as determined by a background investigation under procedures established by the Commission.

Salary Information

  • Starting at $41,000 annually  
  • Annual salary additive of approximately $1,700 when employed in Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee or St. Lucie counties. Annual salary additive of approximately $2,740 when employed in Palm Beach, Dade, Broward or Monroe counties.
